What parents need to know Parents need to know that this game is an extension of the Bella Sara online virtual world and card collecting franchise, and also emphasizes collecting more than cards within the game. There are various train environments that players can ride through at their leisure.
The environments look good, and have night and day variations. They're very linear though, so there's not a lot of exploration to be had. The show jumping competitions are just that, too. There are numbered jumps laid out that the player must leap over under a certain time. The stables, trails, and arena are the stages for various odd jobs and tasks, which earn the player money and Bella Sara trading cards.
The card aspect adds an addictive quality to the title. Knowing that every task you do is essentially like opening a booster pack helps motivate. Rare cards can be purchased from the store, along with new outfits and accessories for the player and the horses.
As cards are collected new horses are unlocked as well, and each one is fully customizable. There's a weird feeling of solitude in the game. There are a couple characters in the game, like the old woman that runs the stable, or the shopkeeper, but most of the time it's just you and the horse. Even the arena, which is technically packed with flat color blobs that represent people, still feels very empty.
Some multiplayer would have been nice to make this more of a social experience. There is a card swapping mode, where players can trade duplicate cards if a friend also has the game, which is nice for completing collections, but not fun or anything.
Verdict Bella Sara is not the best horse game on the DS. It is the best Bella Sara product I've seen though. If you know somebody yourself perhaps? Even just a horse enthusiast is likely to be entranced for a while. These tasks include players feeding, petting, cleaning and brushing their horses.
The good selection of environments and the mixture of day and night settings ensures that variety is quite high in this aspect of the game. No game can function without a robust currency system that gives you that sense of achievement and reward as you experience more and more of what the world has to offer. In Bella Sara money and trading cards are earned for a range of odd jobs in the game world which does allow players to gravitate to the tasks they prefer rather than feel forced into certain tasks to generate funds.
This money can be spent on all sorts of purchases like new outfits, accessories and new horses to care for. This review was first published on July 12,
