Choosing a new skin site each day usually helps alleviate this problem; if it continues, you can consider switching to another brand of patch. Sleep disturbances Some people using the patch report disruptions to their sleep, such as vivid dreams, insomnia , and other disturbances.
If your sleep is still affected after three or four days of using a nicotine patch, try taking the patch off after 16 hours to give your skin a rest. Racing heartbeat and dizziness If this occurs, stop using the patch immediately and talk to your doctor about switching to a lower-dose patch. For most people who smoke one pack per day or less, the following is a reasonable starting point: more than 15 cigarettes per day: 21 mg patch Step 1 seven to 15 cigarettes per day: 14 mg patch Step 2.
Possible Side Effects. Wearing the nicotine patch to bed at night can disrupt sleep and cause vivid dreams. If this becomes a concern, remove the patch before bed and put a fresh one on the next morning.
Some users experience itching, burning or tingling when they first apply the patch. Then begin using nicotine patch therapy first thing in the morning on your Quit Date. Apply the patch to a clean, dry, hairless area of skin on the upper chest, back, upper arm, or hip as directed by the package directions. Avoid areas of irritated, oily, scarred, or broken skin. Try not to touch the sticky side of the patch the side with the protective cover.
In fact, using more than one NRT product at a time — known as combination therapy — can be a good thing as it often increases your chances of success. This will decrease problems with skin irritation. Wear the patch all day. Do not put it on and remove it as a substitute for a cigarette. Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.
Keep from freezing. After removing a used patch, fold it in half with the sticky sides together. Place the used patch in its storage pouch and throw it away.
