My windows update does not work. When I "Check for Updates" it will never download anything. Ive had it trying for over 12 hours before and it makes no progress. There use to be updates available when i first had this problem about a year ago but I had tried something a while back and erased all available updates as well as my history of updates. Ive noticed i cant download other things on my computer either like Java.
Every time i turn on my computer Java tells me there is an update and every time i try to down load, it gives me error code This thread is locked. You can follow the question or vote as helpful, but you cannot reply to this thread.

That's what it took for me to finally proceed. Yes I have turned off my anti virus , I don 't have software firewall running on the computer windows firewall is disabled , and i have terminated all programs running back. Same error code tried stand alone and update, disabled firewall, antivirus and antispyware tried rebooting, scanning the HD, scanning the system files and everything else they suggest to no avail. You're right, this is crazy, any help? If you are getting a black screen w ith!!
To recover you will have to boot with your Vista DVD in the drive, select repair, which it won't then do a system restore to the point that the SP1 install creates, this will get you back to a working pc. This doesn't touch your existing programs. And will leave you with a clean Vista install so to speak.

I'm just stating that it is better and safer to wait for the official release from Microsoft provided via Windows Update. Better because you will then have no doubt that the download contains all the components. Safer because you are almost guaranteed it has not been hacked while on Microsoft's servers.
All legitimate websites hope that the downloads they offer are safe and not tampered with. However, there is no way to prevent a hacker from altering the download even after it has been put on the website.
This has happened many times and can be verified. The fact the hashes are the same does not mean they have not been altered after the verification. There are ways to insert code into an application without the application realizing changes have been made and there are ways to hide code that cannot be discovered. I'm not a hacker so I don't know how to do this. However, it has been done before and is also currently being done. I may be wrong, but I think Microsoft offered an update years ago that contained some kind of malware.
I don't know if this malware was inserted into the update by someone at Microsoft or an outside hacker. Again, I could be incorrect about this issue.
