Connect windows 98 netgear router

I have changed network cards 4 times. I have even built 2 different PC's with different hardware to try and eliminate a hardware issue. Both Windows 98 SE machines give me identical results. I have tried several different cables and different ports on the router. I have tried connecting it directly to the cable modem using the cable company's setup instructions I have connected my XP Pro machine and my Linux machine seperately to the same connections and same cables I am having the Windows 98 SE failures on and they connect perfectly.

I have tried disabling all security on the Netgear router. I have tried disabling wireless access on the Netgear router. I haved tried removing the Vonage router for the network I have tried swapping all cables. I have tried to release or renew using winipconfig. Both Windows 98 machines have fresh OS installs with no hardware conflicts.

I cannot understand why only the Windows 98 SE machines will not work. They will ping They will not ping ny router or my ISP. Even with these settings, I cannot ing Labels: Installation Troubleshooting. Me too. Accepted Solutions. Message 2 of 4. All Replies. Not applicable.

Then I type exit and it restarts windows from the DOS prompt and sends me to the log on screen. I log on and only then, does my computer connect to the router and network and now it's a network computer! I don't want to go through this tedious process everytime I start my 2nd computer.

Can you help??? Thanks a lot for your first response! Ok here's what you can try. Go back to the basics. Make sure all computers have the same protocals installed ie. All but not as important the same workgroup name. For the life of me I can't see why you would have to boot from DOS to get the network to work.

Unless you are some how logging on to a different network set up than what is setup on your desktop. Make sure all the ducks are in a row and then let me know if this doesn't help Regards Bryan.

It's because of a resource conflict - most likely an IRQ. When exiting to DOS you can then initialize the card and force it to take an IRQ before windows assigns it to another resource.

But since he needs his modem, I rigged up something in Autoexec that runs the Netgear diagnostics before Windows boots.
