For the second problem, you can go to Control Panel, Automatic Updates and change your Automatic Updates settings for Windows Automatic Updates to download and notify or download and install at a scheduled time or even off, though I don't recommend that! For the first issue, you can't, unless you completly disable the Windows Automatic Updates service. Even on dial-up, updates for MSE should not impact your bandwidth significantly more than once per day and usually for a short time, though once per month the download will be quite large as it needs to update the engine and entire database.

If the AV is causing other issues because of secondary updates that it needs and downloads you might want a different AV solution. I just don't see how disabling critical updates to your AV can ever be accepted as a solution.

How many nodes are you thinking of installing it on? MSE is only permitted for businesses on 10 nodes or less. MSE is a deprecated product? I'm only aware it's a consumer grade AV that is neither licensed nor installable on servers.

Care to share any reference on that? I wouldn't know, as that reference to deprecation is an opinion, not exactly a fact. I fully agree that is neither a good product nor a possible solution in this case, but, unless I read it wrong, quality is not the original question. I use my computer for Music recording and production - it's embarrassing to have my system slow down, or have audio drop-outs, because MSE decides to update in the middle of a session with a client.
